About 100 years ago, empires in Bali had power to rule a territory. Now, empire in Bali just like in Ubud is not a part of government anymore but plays a big role in the field of social, culture, and art. Puri Saren, the most prominent part of Ubud Palace is located in front of Ubud market.

This vintage building in the heart of Ubud is the place where Ubud’s Royal Family lives in. After the last king of Ubud passed away, his sons have tried their best to keep the culture and art growing while also to prevent penetration of other things which are not suitable with Ubud’s identity. Actually all Ubud Palaces are essentially just family homes and none of them have been turned to be museum or official public place for tourists.

Puri Saren Agung is an exception though there is still royal resident including the last king’s descendants live in it. Puri Saren Agung is considered as the father palace of the other Ubud palaces. Set near Ubud Market, this place where you can see Balinese dance performance and other shows regularly is hard to miss. This place is also the place where you can adore the unique beautifully Balinese architecture. In short Puri Saren Ubud is excellent to be visited for anyone staying in Ubud or anyone who is travelling through Ubud area.

Besides Puri Saren Agung there are some other palaces (or Balinese call it ‘Puri’) in Ubud such as Puri Kantor, Puri Kantor Sosrobahu, Puri Kawan, Puri Menara, and etc. But these ‘Puri’ seem not open for tourism. Please be careful because the name of Puri now is used not only to indicate original royal palace. Many hotel managements decided to name their hotel with a word phrase that starts with Puri. Don’t misunderstand if a building has a nameplate with the word Puri, it maybe just a hotel.

On Thursday, the 18th of August 2011, will be held the Pelebon ceremony of Anak Agung Niang Rai of Puri Agung Ubud. She is the wife of Tjokorda Gde Agung Sukawati (1910-1978), penglingsir (head of royal family) of Puri Agung Ubud since 1931 until 1978 and widely known as “the King of Ubud”.

Anak Agung Niang Rai is the mother of Tjokorda Gde Putra Sukawati (Tjok Putra), Tjokorda Gde Oka AA Sukawati (Tjok Ace), and Tjokorda Gde Raka Sukawati (Tjok De), which currently serves as Vice Bendesa Adat (vice of village head) of Ubud and among the community known as the undagi of Lembu and Bade. Anak Agung Niang Rai also has five grandsons from her three sons.

Anak Agung Niang Rai was born in Bungbungan village, a village located In Klungkung regency of Bali around 1930. She married Tjokorda Gde Agung Sukawati of Puri Agung Ubud in January 1955.

Anak Agung Niang Rai then lived in Puri Agung Ubud and always accompanied her husband in serving the community. Tjokorda Agung was one of the most important figures in the history of Ubud. During his throne at Puri Agung Ubud, he pioneered the development of Ubud and it has made Ubud eventually became widely known as one of the art-cultural centers and a leading tourist area in Bali.

Anak Agung Niang Rai passed away at her age of 80s on Saturday the 14th of May 2011 (based on the Balinese calendar, the days was Saniscara Paing Wuku Ukir) at 8:15am. Her body then being lied down at Puri Agung Ubud. The Pelebon ceremony will be held on Thursday the 18th of August 2011 (Wraspati Pon Wuku Krulut).

Even though the ceremony is a cremation for the dead, but the atmosphere is always alive. Besides being a religious ceremony, the Pelebon ceremony also has become one of the most famous tourist attractions in Bali.

Pelebon ceremony is a ceremony to purify and return the elements of Panca Maha Butha (five elements of the universe that form the life) in human body (Bhuana Alit, the micro-cosmos) to the universe (Bhuana Agung, the macro-cosmos). The elements of Panca Maha Butha in the human body are:

Pertiwi (the earth, solid matters): like the flesh, bones and teeth. Apah (the water): like the blood, tears, saliva and mucus.

Teja (the light): like the aura and the light of eyes.

Bayu (the air, the wind): like breathe and energy.

Akasa (the space): the abstract elements (the ether) in human body.

Pelebon ceremony is a Hindu-Balinese traditional-religious ceremony which had been held since centuries ago and still survived until now in the midst of changing times. In this ceremony we also can see the togetherness among the Puri Agung Ubud and the community, and among community members.

The body will depart the Puri Agung Ubud at around 12:30 pm. The body will be taken by a Bade (a cremation tower) with nine storeys and it is as high as 25 meters, accompanied by a 7.5 meters-high Lembu (a giant sarcophagus bull) and others Pelebon ceremony paraphernalia into the cremation location at the Dalem Puri Temple in Peliatan which is about 900 meters to the east of Puri Agung Ubud. The procession of this cremation ceremony is expected to finish at around 5 pm. The Pelebon ceremony or also known as a Ngaben (cremation) ceremony is one of the most famous Hindu-Balinese traditional-religious ceremonies. This ceremony is a form of respect from the families and local communities to Anak Agung Niang Rai.

A phenomenal book “Eat, Pray, Love” has revealed that Ubud has still its allure. People who have read this book and watched the movie knew how Liz gained balance in her life and found herself fall to wonderful Brazillian guy in Ubud. Ketut Liyer and Wayan are two characters who get the most attention that many people come to Ubud to see them.

From Wayan, Liz learnt how to survive. Wayan raises her child after leaving an abusive husband and from a strong stigma of being divorced. Liz didn’t need long time to collect $ 18,000 to buy Wayan her own shop. And now Wayan’s shop has waitlist. Marylou Dridger with her friend revealed that they looked for Wayan’shop when they were in Ubud. And as she wrote in her article, the shop is not hard to be found. After consuming a healthy menu, Wayan offered her customers to do body checks at small cost.

Besides Wayan’s Shop, Ketut Liyer’s home also become a tourist object. There are so many Gilbert’s book readers, reporters, or even people who want Liyer to read their hand lines. This medicine man is sometimes too tired to see many people. Before mentioning his opinion about one’s hand lines, eyebrow shape, face shape, and others, Liyer always explains that he is a painter rather than a medicine man. However, tourists are willing to be in a waiting list to see a character who has taught Liz how to do Yoga. Some people are so happy after seeing him, some others are not so.

Plus this cultural town has new celebs and possibilities to find your love. Liz was so lucky found Felipe after long journey to Italy and India.

The name of Ubud is derived from Balinese word ‘Ubad’ which means medicine. And now, people come to this cultural town not only for holiday but also spiritual healing.

For many reasons, people believe that Ubud is the place to do Yoga, Pilates, meditation, and other spiritual healing. Although must say that some places in Karangasem offers quiet place for Yoga but Ubud is the most attractive one. This cultural town still has spectacular greenery, fresh air, and hidden place far from noise but the best attractions can still be reached within a couple of minutes’ drive.

Nowadays, people are easy to be stressful because of the strong life pressure and dissatisfaction. This unbalanced condition may affect people’s health and they begin to consume many many tablets containing chemical substances to relieve the pain or to calm themselves down. You know these medicines could help those people but why consuming chemical substances while we can heal ourselves without it. Yoga and other Healing Movements will help you to balance your body, mind, and soul.

Seeking for balance is the main reason why people actively join Yoga Class in Ubud. There are many places to go for Yoga in Ubud, such as: Bali Purniati (www.balipurnati.com), Yoga Barn (http://www.theyogabarn.com/), and Michi Retreat (http://www.michiretreat.com/). They offer spectacular settings, various programs, and professional yoga teachers. Many tourists who have joined a Yoga Class get the benefit of being so relaxed and can’t wait to come back.

Though I have mentioned several Yoga Studios above but Ubud is the rich place for the spiritually inclined tourists. You can find some others when exploring Ubud. For an awesome holistic break, Ubud is the place to be.

Many tourists and Bali visitors are spending their holiday just being lazy; enjoy good food, take a sunbath, read the book you never had time for and just relax.

However it is worth to consider a one or two day visit to Ubud, the artist village, located some 30 kilometers North of Denpasar. Except a cool climate and a very green environment, you will find here plenty of arts.

Most famous of course are the paint works; often underestimated since they are cheap. And indeed many ‘artists’ are downloading pictures from the internet, and with the picture in one hand and the brush in the other, they make a stunning copy. Is this art? No….. not really.

But once you take the time to visit the more of road painters in their galleries, you will find stunning art works for amazing prices. Some of Indonesia’s most famous painters are educated or got there first experience just here, in Ubud, in a short distance from the beach.

Many shipping and forwarding companies are located in Ubud as well; they can take for a cheap door-to-door delivery, in every corner of the world. They take care for packing, have the correct knowledge about customers and export documents.

Once you have the opportunity to take a bit more time in Ubud, consider also about strolling around to streets filled with other kinds of art, glass for example. The main street from Ubud, heading out of town to the north, is filled with art galleries, specialized in glass art. Vases, sculptures, glass paintings, lamps, name it, and you find it.

Some people still wonder from where Ubud got that arty atmosphere and creative people to craft amazing artistries. Ubud is blessed with greatest greenery with pleasant weather that is the atmosphere of artists look for. Many ideas can come up from the place like that. No wonder, artists coming from abroad started to stay here and drew locals’ fabulous ability up to now. The same thing happens also at St Paul de Vence in France where many overseas artists found their home. That thing gives these small towns unique, mixed cultural character. Definitely also due to Ubud’s bohemian character, this small town is widely blessed with restaurants, offering sumptuous dishes from all over the world. Well, it is only a layman’s hypothesis.

Too tired to drive back to the beach? Or not in the mood yet? Upscale luxury resorts are plenty available, even as smaller, cozy and cheap guest houses. And discover yourself in a heaven of art. Ubud, art or copy cat? Visit Ubud and conclude it.
