Thousands of Peliatan and Ubud residences along with tourists, foreign dignitaries, Bali and Peliatan Royal families as well as the King of Solo, Central Java attended the royal cremation ceremony of Ida Dewa Agung Peliatan, the late King of Peliatan IX, on Tuesday. This royal cremation ceremony was the last tribute paid to the late King, who died from diabetes last August by Peliatan’s and Ubud’s royal family.

The highlights of this royal ceremonies were Naga Banda, Bade and Lembu. Naga Banda was a 6-meter-tall dragon-shaped bridge presented by the royal family of Ubud as a sign of respect to the late king. Before the Naga Banda was used to carry the body of the king to the bade (cremation tower), it was “killed” by Hindu High Priest Ida Pedanda Lingsir Padang Tegal, who presided over the religious ritual, by firing a sacred arrow as a symbol of renouncement of earthly desire by the late king. The bade (cremation tower) has 11 pyramid-shaped roofs signifying the king’s lineage from the noblemen of East Java’s Majapahit Kingdom. This 20-ton cremation tower was carried by thousands of Peliatan, Ubud and Tegalalang residences. The 25-meter-tall bade was used to transport the king’s body from his palace in Peliatan to the royal cemetery. Last but not least was Lembu, a giant bull-shaped sarcophagus, that was used as container of the king’s body when it was cremated. This white bull has 22-carat-gold horn.

This grand cremation ceremony was a sign of love and respect of the people to the late king, hundreds of artists working voluntarily to create the cremation tower, Naga Banda and Lembu that befitted their king. Thousands of Peliatan, Ubud, Tegallalang and surrounding villages’ residences happily bear the weight of 20-ton cremation tower under the scorching sun. And the cremoation ceremony is also the duty of all descendants to organize a proper cremation ceremony for the elders who brought them into the world, by returning all mortal remains back to their original sources water, fire, earth, light and air.

Tens of thousands of locals and tourists are expected to flock to the tiny resort village of Ubud, Bali, on Tuesday to witness the Palebon (cremation ceremony) of three members of the Ubud royal family.

Among the royals to be cremated is Tjokorda Gde Agung Suyasa, who formerly headed the Ubud royal family and was Bendesa (chief) of Desa Pekraman (a traditional customary village) for more than three decades.

A stoic aristocrat, Suyasa was also one of the most influential figures behind the revival of Balinese Hinduism in several parts of the country. He donated generous contributions to several major Hindu temples in Java, including the majestic Mandhara Giri Semeru Agung temple in East Java, and others in Kalimantan and Lombok.
